An endodontist is a specialised dentist with special training in diagnosing and treating problems associated with the root canal system of the tooth.

Endodontists complete at least four years of dental school and then an additional two or more years of advanced training in endodontics. Endodontists are also licensed by the Dental Board of Australia (now known AHPRA).

Endodontists primarily perform root canal treatments, including:

  • Re-treatment of previous root canals fillings that have not completely healed
  • Anatomic problems including tooth curvature and calcification
  • Dental emergencies such as toothaches from infection
  • Oral Trauma such as cracked or displaced teeth or even when a tooth has been knocked completely out
  • Diagnose & treat oral and facial pain - often helping your dentist find which tooth the pain is coming from
  • Surgical procedures, most of which are required as an alternative to conventional root canal threatments
  • Endodontists can also treat more complex conditions, such as extreme pain and medically compromised patients

Endodontists also routinely acquire continuing education to stay abreast of state-of-the-art research, clinical procedures, and technology, such as operating microscopes, ultrasonics and digital imaging.
