About Pain

Endodontic treatment (root canal treatment)

Whether your endodontist is undertaking conventional root canal treatment or via a surgical approach, both are designed to remove diseased tissue and restore teeth to a healthy state. Root canal treatment relieves pain. In many cases, root canal treatment relieves chronic pain from toothaches caused by pulp inflammation or infection.

Root canal treatment is generally painless because anaesthetic is used to dull or eliminate nerve sensitivity. On special request a sedative may also be used in conjunction with the anaesthetic. In most cases, a root canal treatment is no less traumatic thnt a conventional filling.

Any discomfort you feel following root canal treatment can be minimised or eliminated by over-the-counter pain relief such as Nurofen (an ibuprofen) or Panadol (paracetamol). If pain, swelling or undue pressure persists after a week or so, you should contact your endodontist. The whole team at A/Prof Zimet's Specialist Endodontic Practice are here to ensure your root canal treatment is as easy and enjoyable as can be. We are contactable Monday to Friday for any questions you have with your treatment concerns. Please call 03 9794 9677. Emergency after hours care is also available for those in need.
